Privacy

Last updated: 23 August 2026

This is a personal engineering blog run by Sahan Serasinghe in Adelaide, Australia. I collect as little data as practical, do not sell personal information, and do not use behavioural advertising.

Your choices at a glance

The site works without optional storage. You can enable either, both, or neither of these features:

  • Remembered recommendations store topics and recently shown posts in this browser. This helps the featured section surface useful older articles.
  • Analytics cookies let Google Analytics use session cookies for more complete usage measurement.

Remembered recommendations do not run before you enable them. Google Analytics uses advanced Consent Mode, so the Google tag can load with analytics storage denied before you make a choice. In that state, Analytics does not read or write Analytics cookies, but it can send cookieless measurement pings to Google for basic measurement and modelling.

You can change your choice at any time using Privacy settings in the footer. A browser-level Do Not Track setting prevents the Google Analytics tag from loading at all.

Information stored in your browser

StorageWhat it does and when it is used
Privacy choiceRemembers your settings after you make a choice.
Theme preferenceRemembers light or dark mode when you change the theme.
Checklist progressSaves the production readiness checklist on this device when you use it.
Recommendation historyRemembers reading topics and recently shown posts only when you enable remembered recommendations.
Google Analytics cookiesDistinguish visits during a browser session only when you enable analytics cookies.

These browser values stay on your device until you clear site data or change the relevant setting. Turning remembered recommendations off deletes their topic history. Turning analytics cookies off updates Google Analytics consent to denied and removes its first-party analytics cookies from this site.

Services this site uses

Netlify hosting

Netlify serves the website. Like most hosting providers, it may process request information such as your IP address, browser details, requested URL, date and time for delivery, reliability and security.

Google Analytics

Unless your browser has Do Not Track enabled, the Google Analytics tag loads with advertising storage, advertising user data, advertising personalisation and analytics storage denied by default. With analytics storage denied, Google says Analytics does not read or write first-party Analytics cookies. Cookieless pings can still be sent for measurement and modelling. Those requests can include ordinary browser and request information such as page URL, user agent, screen resolution and IP address in transit. Google states that Analytics does not store or log IP addresses from these pings.

If you enable analytics cookies, Google Analytics may also receive the referring page, broad device and browser details, approximate region, engagement information, and events such as a featured-post click or newsletter form submission. I do not intentionally send your email address or article form contents to Analytics.

Analytics advertising storage and personalisation remain denied even when analytics cookies are enabled. Google Signals is disabled. Analytics cookies expire at the end of the browser session rather than being kept persistently. Google may process Analytics information outside Australia. Google Analytics data is retained according to the retention setting on this site’s Analytics property.

EthicalAds

EthicalAds displays ads based on the page being read, not a behavioural profile. Its service receives ordinary web-request information needed to deliver, protect, and measure ads. EthicalAds says it does not use cookies or local storage for ad viewers and deletes identifying log data after 10 days.

Buttondown newsletter

If you subscribe, your email address and subscription activity are processed by Buttondown. This happens only when you submit a newsletter form. Every email includes an unsubscribe option. I keep subscription information until you unsubscribe, ask for deletion, or it is no longer needed to run the newsletter.

When you use the search page, Algolia receives the search query and ordinary request information required to return results. Search is not loaded on ordinary article pages.

These providers may process information in Australia, the United States, Europe, or other locations where they operate. Their linked policies explain their handling practices in more detail.

Contact and requests

You can ask what personal information I hold about you, request correction or deletion, or raise a privacy concern by emailing sahan.serasinghe@gmail.com. I may need enough information to identify the relevant record, such as the email address used for a newsletter subscription.

If this page changes materially, I will update the date above and ask for a fresh choice when the optional uses change.
